Flying was becoming popularized and well marketed into mainstream America. The larger private aircraft companies, like Cessna, Piper, and Beechcraft, encouraged everyone in the family by advertising in the mainstream media. Affordable introductory lessons were promoted by flying schools and organizations. These same planes appeared with increasing frequency on television shows and in modern Westerns, notably on the television series Sky King.

In an unexpected piece of good fortune in 1948, James Nevins, recorded this first—unscheduled—American Airlines arrival. LaGuardia Airport was still an international airport with flights beyond North America before Idlewild Airport, the future JFK, was built. In this case, LaGuardia was fogged in and two flights got diverted to Westchester. Operations manager Frank Ward greets Capt. O.J. O’Connor. This was a stealth start of airline service, as a few air carriers made diversions. Diverted passengers got expedited limo service into New York City via the county parkways, causing little delay. A waiting room was built with amenities including a restaurant. Such diversions would become a somewhat regular event. Westchester’s runways, starting at 4,500 feet, were slightly longer than LaGuardia’s initial 3,600-foot runways.
